        Enrollment
How can I enroll my child?

Stop by our office to pick up an enrollment packet, or go to our Enrollment page and download the forms.

        When is enrollment open?
        Enrollment is open year-round.

Do you limit the number of students you enroll?
No.  We will accept as many students as our staff can accommodate.

Can I enroll for just one semester?
We feel a full year enrollment is best for our students.  However, we will discuss your situation with you and consider requests for partial-year enrollment.  Students may enter at the semester break in January.

Can my child enroll part time?
Yes.  Your child may be enrolled with us part-time and with a local public school, private school, or home school for  the remainder of their day.

        Eligibility
        What are your enrollment boundaries?

We accept students from throughout Alaska.  Our boundaries are the State of Alaska’s boundaries!

        Do you enroll pre-school children?
No, we don’t enroll pre-school children.  According to state regulations, students must be 5 years old by September 1st.

Are we still able to enroll if my family needs to travel out of state for part of the year?
We will discuss your situation with you on a case-by-case basis.  All students in Grades 3 and older are required to be in Alaska for state testing in early April.

        Allotment
What does it cost to enroll with Upstream Learning?

Upstream Learning is a public school program, as part of the Copper River School District.  Therefore, there is no cost to the student or the family.

I've heard mention of an allotment.  What is that?
The State of Alaska provides each student with a fund account from which to purchase curriculum materials, classroom supplies and lessons.  We administer the allotment fund, and the parent draws on this fund to pay for educational costs for the school year.

How much is the allotment per year?
Students in Grades K-4 receive $1800, Grades 5-8 receive $2000 and Grades 9-12 receive $2200 for the 2010-11 school year, beginning July 1st.

Can we roll over the remaining allotment into next year?
No.  The allotment cannot be saved and spent next school year.  It also cannot be shared with another family member.  Each student may spend from their account only.

        Who purchases the curriculum?
Curriculum choices must first be pre-approved by our contact teacher as part of the student’s Individual Learning Plan.  Then the family can choose to order the materials themselves and apply for reimbursement, or the parent can fill out a requisition form and submit to our office for ordering.

        Curriculum

        What curriculums are allowed?

We allow parents to choose curriculum materials that are best suited to their student’s individual learning style, abilities and interests.  Curriculum must be aligned to state standards and must be reviewed by our contact teacher before purchase.  Parents may choose to use faith-based curriculum, but may not use allotment funds to purchase it.  We encourage parents to research the array of curriculum that is available as they make their choices.

Will you help me choose curriculum?
Yes, that’s one of our contact teacher’s main duties.  We will offer as much or as little assistance as you need in choosing curriculum.  In fact, as part of our enrollment procedure, you will sit down with our contact teacher and go over your student’s Individual Learning Plan before we purchase any curriculum.  We have catalogs, used curriculum resources, and web links to assist you in your planning.
