Our Upstream Learning classroom is a busy art studio this week, as Nancy Bell is teaching a 3-day class and 11 students are creating a unique "Picture Book". Students range from Kindergarten through 11th grade, and it's a joy to watch them interacting with each other. Nancy Bell is a master teacher, and brings out the best in each student, whatever their age or prior experience. She is currently making plans for classes in the fall, so if your child has an interest in learning how to paint, please let Nancy know this spring, so she can plan accordingly.
Our support teacher, Ramona Henspeter, spent April 17th and 18th in Anchorage, attending the IDEA Curriculum Fair. We are appreciative of IDEA's invitation to attend, as there is nothing else like this available to our homeschooling families in Alaska. This was the 16th year of this Alaska-wide homeschool conference, and it was filled with tons of information, over 60 vendor tables, and timely encouragement, as always! Families come in from far and wide to attend, as do the presenters and vendors. The featured speaker was Debra Bell, a veteran homeschool mom with a wealth of personal experience and a PhD in educational psychology. Other speakers included Stephen Guffanti MD, Brian Wasko, Tom Clark, and many more nationally-known experts in the field. Based on everything seen and heard, homeschooling is alive and well in Alaska! If you'd like to read a summary of many of the workshops, here are Ramona's notes.
The Standards Based Assessments (SBA's) are now behind us. Thank you, parents, for getting your students to SBA testing this past week. Students from Upstream Learning achieved 100% attendance for the Reading, Writing and Math tests, thanks to your efforts! We realize some of you had to do some complex juggling and re-arranging of your family schedule to get your student(s) to the test site, so we appreciate your efforts! Now it's time to get back to your normal schedule, as we're on the home stretch towards summer!
